Perry Mason

Hallmark ran a Perry Mason marathon last weekend, and I recorded a half dozen episodes. Here are some of my observations:
  • Miranda had not been invented yet
  • Perry was not above bending the law
  • I can't decide whether he was chivalrous or chauvinist
  • He liked to contaminate crime scenes
  • Dr. Gilbert (Gil) Grissom would have a conniption if he saw how Mason conducted his own pre-notifying the police investigation of the scene.
  • Criminals had a conscience back then; they were always confessing on the stand.
  • Finally, everything was black and white.

My dear papa

I think that Simon and Garfunkel said it best...
Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you

I miss you dearly, dad.

Best Practices paper

I have a 1500-2000 word paper w/13 slide PPT due on 3/19. I have actually been working on it for about 10 days now. First, I did all this research. Then, I made an annotated bibliography. Now I am outlining and taking notes. I only mention this because I have never written a paper in this fashion before. Usually I write, revise, write, revise. Outline? Take notes? Very strange stuff, We shall see how successful this experiment is. Oh, and did I mention that starting something this far in advance of the actual due date is also unheard of?

When the boss has your back...

I feel like my boss really proved to me today that he had my back. Remember the bookmarks with the wrong URLs? So he took some to a marketing meeting, and someone noticed. He came back, said they liked them, asked how many we had, and suggested maybe tweaking the URL for next time. I was very impressed with how he handled it. He recognized the amount of hard work that went into them, and then later figured out (which I had thought of, but hadn't mentioned) that we just needed to put a redirect at the published URL.

So, a couple of lessons here. I should have probably shown Bob yesterday. I should have mentioned the redirect when I thought of it. And the most important lesson, I feel like I can trust Bob to have my back.

I got more feedback today - from FZ, a nice job, thumbs up; from LR, some constructive criticism. This has been a real learning experience. Of course, most of the last 6 months has been a learning experience!

A Day of Ups and Downs

Down...Peyton Manning is no longer the Colts QB
Up...it does look like he will play somewhere

Up...Finished the DC bookmarks, and the print shop printed them while I waited and they looked remarkable
Down...While the QR code works, apparently the URL does not http://wwww.digitalcommons.brockport.edu  should be just digitalcommons.brockport.edu

Up....my boss thinks they look great
Down...his boss thinks I should have done them differently

Up....had lunch with my sister
Down....apparently I ruined her birthday by not inviting her over that day

Down...I got a parking ticket for parking on the grass (actually I had gone up on the curve a little)
Up...it wasn't a speeding ticket

OK, I feel a little better now. Some people you will never please, so be happy with those you can.
